You could probably get away with non-sparkly red shoes even and people would still get the reference.Īny white shirt you have will make do, even a budget £5 cheap basic button down from Asda/Walmart will work. Otherwise you can buy glittery red heels or flats on eBay or with a bit of search engine researching. The summary of the cost for making my own worked out as £4 for the flats, approx £8 for the gemtac, maybe £4 for the crystals, £1 for a gem picker, and the time-cost of a few hours in front of the TV (I’d guestimate these took somewhere between 4-6 hours, but I enjoy it and have a collection of bedazzled shoes.) I wear my red bedazzled flats 80% of the time, and if you like the idea it’s worth the time investment. If you want to make a pair of these red crystal shoes for yourself you can find my tutorial for how to bedazzle here. I have a huge thing for red bedazzled shoes, having already made myself a pair of red sparkly heels in the past as well as I pair of matching ballet flats that I wore so often I had to replace with a second pair. If you’re that concerned about dealing with nitpickers all night then feel free to leave your basket empty people will still get the idea.įinally, there’s the ruby slippers. Toto wasn’t a Dalmatian, I know, but I went with what I had, and I doubt the average Halloween-celebrator will get that up in arms if your stuffed dog is the wrong breed. I used a basket we already had in the shed and placed my little Toto in it. I used ribbon I happened to have lying around to tie my pincurls into loose pigtails, but you could get as elaborate as you want with your hair to channel a little more vintage style into this look while still giving off Dorothy vibes. That being said, the good news is that it’s therefore pretty easy to make a Dorothy costume, and since the film was made in 1939 Dorothy herself is already vintage, so we don’t really need to give her a pinup makeover.įor my outfit I layered the Lindy Bop Marlene dress in blue gingham over a Forever 21 peplum white shirt I got a few years ago. That being said if you can afford it you will not be disappointed! It is surprisingly sturdy for glass, but you still will need to be careful as it is delicate.I get Dorothy comparisons all the time, and it’s not hard to see why with my penchant for red sparkly shoes and gingham prints. It really depends on whether you can afford it. I am not sure I would have bought this if I didn’t have the rewards. It was rather expensive, so I used rewards dollars I had saved up. Overall I am very satisfied with this ornament. The box has plenty of room for the tissue paper and the slipper, so no issues of getting it to fit in the box. The back of the slippers have flowers on the heel, and the sole of the shoes are a matte black. There is some glitter on the white part, but that may be from the red and gold glitter of the slippers. That being said there is slight depth between the white surface and the red of the shoe, so it looks very realistic. The white part is a flat surface, you cannot put your fingers inside like with a real shoe. The paint is very nice and detailed with a pretty white sheen where the foot would go in a real slipper. There is plenty of glitter all over the ornament, so much so that some gets on your hands, but that’s to be expected. With something as delicate as blown glass, I would have preferred a foam insert like the one seen in the Harry Potter using the Invisibility Cloak Glass ornament review. It comes with a wonderful box, but the ornament itself is only protected by tissue paper. Second, the hook looks rather flimsy, I will have to be very careful it doesn’t fall off the slipper. The slipper can stand up on its own, so if it doesn’t work as an ornament it will make a nice display piece. First, the ornament is rather large and delicate to put on a Christmas tree, I will test it when my tree goes up. There are a few cons which is why I chose 4 stars. The picture on the website doesn’t do it justice, it looks much more stunning in person.
